Picking a mover is one of the most important decisions you will make. Always check to make sure the mover is a legitimately licensed, bonded and insured company. This will give you the comfort that the mover is regulated by the state or the fed and that you will have recourse if something goes wrong that the mover cannot or will not resolve to your satisfaction. Please review this section to help you decide on the mover to trust with your household furniture.

    * Decide in advance which goods will be shipped and which will be sold or given away. Then consider whether or not you would like the mover to pack and what other type of additional services you may want.

    * Call or email the movers you may consider and ask for an estimate. Get involved in the estimating process and try to meet with a relocation consultant to survey your home and prepare a written estimate. Ask each prospective mover for how long his or her estimate is valid.

    * Be certain that the mover has marked all items that are “going” and “not going” on the survey sheet. The mover will prepare an estimate that will include transportation charges and the charges of additional services that you requested. Keep in mind that if you will decide to take more items or take fewer items the cost of your move will change. Please inform the mover if there are any changes with your shipment. Communication is the key factor for a successful move.

    * If you decide to do your own packing or partial packing, remember that the moving company is not liable for damage to boxes packed by customer. However, if there is an obvious exterior damage at the delivery make a note of that on the inventory sheet of your shipment. The driver has the right to refuse to accept any carton that may be improperly packed. If the driver has to re-pack cartons that the customer has packed, additional charges will apply.

    * Please provide as much information as possible about unusual situations on either end so your estimates will be more accurate. Make the mover be aware of any problems they may encounter at the delivery such as parking problems, road access, street accessibility, delivery time restriction or if there are any stairs or elevators involved. The cost of your move can increase for such occurrences. Try to reserve a “parking space” for the moving van if your new home is on a congested street. If the moving crew has to carry your load more than 75 feet from the moving van to your door you may be charged for excessive distance.

Some neighborhoods may prohibit trucks over a certain weight. The driver will than offload your possessions into a smaller vehicle and the charge for that can be quite expensive. Please advise a relocation consultant if you will anticipate this situation. In addition to that, advise the consultant if you are moving to a high-rise building where an elevator reservation is required. This can cause problems for the delivery schedule if the mover does not know about this in advance and additional charges will apply.

    * Ask the prospective mover what type of estimates they offer. There are two estimate options available, Binding estimate and Estimated Cost of Services. Take the necessary time to understand your options. This could have a significant impact on the final cost of your move.

    * Compare all estimates for both weight and services provided by the prospective movers. To check the reliability of the moving company you may use, contact the local Better Business Bureau (BBB) to inquire about the company’s complaint record. Ask your friends, neighbors and family for advice on movers. Ask all movers for references.

    * Be sure to understand the coverage for loss or damage of your shipment. All licensed movers must provide liability for the value of goods, which they transport. However, there are different levels of liability. You must be aware of the amount of protection provided and the additional charges that may apply.

Moving can be a great time to “clean your closet”. Through the years a lot of us accumulate a lot of things we really don’t need. It only makes it harder on you to hold onto this stuff not to mention its time consuming and will require space at your new location.

You don’t necessarily need to throw your items away and it can be a perfect opportunity to donate items to your local thrift store.

Prepare Smaller Items

Determine what you’re taking with you and always pack the smaller items first. These items generally need more care and may require wrapping. You also want to make sure you have enough boxes to accommodate all your smaller belongings. Newspaper is a great packing stuffer.

The sooner you start the process the better. This is typically the most time consuming portion of your move so the earlier you get packing, the sooner you get moving.

Try to be organized. Try to group your smaller items in categories, ex. Room. This will relieve a lot of headache when unpacking.

Bigger Items

Despite their size, you still want to ensure that your items arrive as you left them. You’ll need to put your books in boxes and make sure that the boxes are light enough to carry. You may want to scotch guard some of your upholstered furniture or use protective covering in case of any mishaps during the move.

You can also use plastic wrap when applicable to protect some of your larger items.

Finding a Moving Company

Locate a professional with the experience of being a trusted mover. Our database of professionals have been pre-screened and are sure to do the job right to your satisfaction. Try us now for a free quote.

Be Prepared

If your move is local and it’s possible, try to move whatever you can into the new location prior to the actual moving day. This can be a great time to move all your smaller items that can take up a lot of space during your move.

Please be prepared and ready to go on moving day. Professionals are there with your move and time in mind. Please be courteous of others time and don’t leave them waiting.

Below are 25 helpful tips to assist you in planning and conducting your move:

1. Make your moving arrangements as far ahead of your moving date as possible

2. Ensure that you understand all the terms and conditions of your contract (Bill of Lading.)

3. If you plan to do your own packing, start well in advance of your moving date. This avoids the last minute “packing rush”.

4. Leave one box open and label it “TO BE OPENED FIRST”, for items you require immediately upon your arrival at your new home (example: tools, toiletries, remote controls, phone, answering machine, etc.)

5. Extremely fragile items such as glass, mirrors and pictures should be professionally packed or crated.

6. Liquids should noy be shipped as they can leak and cause damage to your shipment and possibly other customers.

7. Pack heavy items in small boxes (example: books in 2 cubic foot boxes, pots & small appliances in 4 cubic boxes.)

8. Label your boxes by the room you would like them moved into(example: master bedroom, kitchen, basement, garage, etc.)

9. Label the top and sides of all cartons with your name and destination city in BOLD LETTERS for easy identification.

10. Set up a specific area in your home for all items not to be shipped and inform your movers of this area.

11. Arrange to have all your major appliances disconnected and serviced before your moving date.

12. Defrost your refrigerator and freezer the day before moving (freezers must be empty at time of loading.)

13. Dispose of all flammables such as matches, aerosols, fuels and propane tanks before your moving date.

14. It is not necessary to empty dresser drawers, but remove all fragile items and liquids.

15. Carry your currency, jewelry and valuable documents with you. Movers will not take responsibility for these articles of “extraordinary value.”

16. Take your “personal” phone book and cell phone with you; you may need to make important calls during your transition.

17. Contact your Moving Consultant 2 to 3 days prior to your move to confirm and review all final details of your move.

18. Review the list of your goods (Inventory Form) with your van foreman and their condition at the time of loading.

19. Make a note of your shipment registration number found in the upper right hand corner of your Bill of Lading and keep it with you in case you need to call your mover with questions about your shipment.

20. Complete a walk through of your home with your van foreman to ensure all items have been removed (check closets, cupboards, behind doors, etc.)

21. Before your van foreman completes loading, give him/her a phone number where you can be reached once you leave. It is VERY IMPORTANT to provide an alternative contact number in case you cannot be reached in your new home.

22. If your move occurs during extreme weather conditions, allow your electronics to acclimatize before plugging them in at your new home.

23. Method of Payment – unless prior credit arrangements have been made, your van foreman is required to collect payment in full before unloading. Final payment must be made by: MONEY ORDER, BANK DRAFT, CASH, VISA OR MASTERCARD.

Credit: www.amovers.com

24. Check your Inventory Forms with the van foreman as your goods are unloaded. Make sure any missing items are identified and removed from the truck before the van foreman and crew depart.

25. Keep a copy of your contract (Bill of Lading), as most moves are tax deductible. Ask your Moving Consultant for more information.

If you will be doing your own packing the most important part will be pre-planning. Mistakes that may result in damages can be made when things are packed in a hurry. Some of these tips may seem like common sense, but they are often forgotten in the midst of a move. If there is something that has not been covered in this list, please call us and a helpful moving consultant can help you with your questions.

    * If you will be using boxes that you got from the grocery store, check them carefully for bugs.
* Begin by packing items you do not use every day.
* Label each box, indicating in which room it should go. Mark fragile boxes boldly so the movers will exercise extra care.
* Upholstered items should be covered with protective plastic to prevent stains or damage.
* Rugs and similar items should be cleaned before the move.
* Remove bulbs and shades from all lamps. Lamp shades should be packed separately in a sturdy box. To protect your lampshades wrap them in bubble wrap. Do not use newspaper as it may leave smudges.
* Valuables should be removed and kept with you. This includes legal documents, financial records, insurance policies, computer diskettes with backed up files, jewelry, cash and credit cards.
* Glass table tops and glass doors on furniture should be crated with bubble wrap and heavy cardboard for safe shipping.
* Dry and canned foods may be shipped as long as they are packed in a sturdy box. Liquids should be discarded or thrown away.
* Chemical and hazardous materials, such as, but not limited to, propane tanks, pool chemicals, fertilizers, paint thinners, solvents, bleach, aerosol cans, and firearms cannot be shipped. Lawnmowers and other equipment with gas tanks must be completely drained prior to shipping.
* Drawers in furniture should be cleared of liquid and heavy items. Light clothing only may be left in sturdy furniture.
* Appliances should be disconnected prior to your moving team arriving. Also, take down shelves, light fixtures or chandeliers if applicable.

Items needing special handling, such as pool tables, Jacuzzi’s or grandfather clocks should be disassembled by a professional prior to your move day. Once these items have been disassembled Movers USA will be glad to pack and ship them for you.

    * Pack largest and heaviest items in bottom of box first. Books and other heavy items should be packed in small boxes.
* Large mirrors or pictures should be wrapped individually, covering both sides with bubble wrap and heavy cardboard, then binding with tape.
* Items should be packed in boxes that are the proper size. If there is empty space in the box use wadded up packing paper to fill up space.
* Small appliances and electronics should be packed in the boxes they came in whenever possible.
* For dishes and glassware you should use specially designed dish packages. Pack dishes on their sides wrapped in newspaper or packing paper in between them.
* If you disassemble any furniture yourself, remember to put the hardware in a plastic bag and attach it with tape so it will not be lost.
* Wrap sharp tools to prevent injury.

Computers and printers should be wrapped in a plastic bag first, then packed in the box it came in or similar sturdy box. Check the owners manual for tips in securing internal components. Repack those boxes in a second, individual box. Fill empty space with bubble wrap or cardboard. Remove printer cartridge. Mark “Fragile” and “This End Up” and the room destination.

Stereos, CD Players, VCR’s and DVD’s should be wrapped in plastic bags and then in the original cartons or similar sturdy box. Check the owners manual for additional packing tips. Repack those boxes in a second, individual box. Mark “Fragile” and “This End UP” and the room destination.

We recommend that clothing be packed in wardrobe boxes. Depending on the size of the garment, these boxes can hold up to 25 hangers. Fill the bottom of the boxes with shoes or other lightweight items.

All licensed movers must provide liability for the value of goods they transport, but you have to be aware of the amount of protection provided and any additional charges that may apply.

There are 3 basic coverage options to choose from:

Basic Carrier Liability

Limited to 60 cents per pound per article. This is called the “released value” (it is the minimum amount of liability required by law when transporting goods out of state). When moving locally, consult a mover on what is the minimal liability for that particular state.

Declared Value Protection

Subject to an additional, minimum charge of $1.25 times the weight of your shipment (based on the depreciated value of an item).

The entire delivery is covered at a value that does not exceed the dollar amount you declare. With this coverage the mover is liable for the entire shipment at an amount equal to $1.25 per pound times the weight of your shipment. If your shipment exceeds the liability of $1.25 per pound times the weight of your shipment, you may obtain full replacement liability.

Remember that movers are permitted to limit their liability for loss or damage to articles of extraordinary value, so it is your responsibility to understand this coverage.

Full Replacement Value

Subject to a minimum charge of either $3.50 or $4.00 times the weight of your shipment (some companies provide Minimum Full Replacement Value coverage, decide if this is enough to cover you).

This coverage equals the replacement cost or the repair of a damaged item. The mover can sell you or procure for you liability insurance in the amount you request if you release your shipment for transportation at a value of 60 cents per pound per article. If any damages or loss to your shipment occurs during your move, the mover would be liable for an amount not exceeding 60 cents per pound per article, and the balance of the loss (up to the amount of insurance purchased) would be recoverable from the insurance company.

This coverage may also have a deductible. Coverage with a deductible reduces the premium (keep in mind that you’re also responsible for the first $100.00, $250.00, or $500.00 of loss or repairs).

EXTRA COVERAGE:

Extra insurance can be purchased thru your mover with an independent insurance company, which will cover you for the duration of the move. Your mover will be able to direct you to a company that will bind your move.

Take down ceiling fans prior to moving day. Movers will charge you for the cost of an electrician to do it. Purchase enough insurance to over damage to especially valuable items, or transport them yourself separately. Movers may not pay for damage to items you pack yourself.

Hire a piano specialist to prepare your piano for the move. Service to a piano will add a hefty additional charge to your bill if the mover does it, and there’s a greater chance of damage. If you have many books, pack them yourself and mail them book rate to save significantly on the cost of your move.

Grandfather clocks should be dissembled by a clock specialist prior to moving day. Ask the mover to inventory your items and check the inventory carefully to be sure everything is included.

Check polished table tops and antiques for any existing damage (nicks and scratches) and note its exact location. Note down the location of all existing damage (worn areas, pulls) to fabric on furnishings.

Disconnect the water to the washing machine and refrigerator and gas to the dryer and range prior to moving day to avoid a surcharge. Confirm on the inventory that all goods with moveable parts are fully operational prior to the move.

Eliminate Rather than Relocate

While you’re organizing or packing for your move, sift and sort. Use a heavy hand toward the trash can, and let common sense be your guide.

Have a Garage Sale!
If you are like most people, you have in your possession many items you really have no use for anymore. Sponsor a garage sale before your move to give yourself a little junk relief! You just might raise enough money to pay for your moving expenses! Remember, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure! If you don’t need it, unload it. Rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last 12 months get rid of it.

Ignore the “I Might Need It Someday” Syndrome.
Don’t move the riding mower to an apartment. Part with tools you won’t have a place to use. And remember, junk is junk. You don’t need a furnished attic.

Did you know that some of the expenses of moving are tax deductible? If you’d like to get any of the following expenses claimed against your tax, read on and see if you qualify.

· Cost of transportation or hauling from old to new residence.

· Cost of packing, crating and unpacking.

· Cost of shipping your car.

· Cost of moving the pets.

· Cost of the trip to the new residence which includes lodging but not meals

Take into account that these deductions must not be excessive amounts, but the real question is, do you qualify for the deductions? All taxpayers are eligible, even if they don’t file itemized returns, as long as you are:

· Moving to a new residence for the purpose of employment, whether it be as an employee or self-employed.

· Moving to a new job, at least 50 miles farther from your new residence than your old job location.

· A full-time employee and employed within the vicinity for at least 39 weeks of the first 12 months of occupancy.

· A self-employed individual, who will work in the new location for at least 78 weeks during the first 24 months following the move, of which 39 weeks must be within the first 12 months.

· Moving to a foreign country, or for military service (These options fall under special limitations, so it’s best to consult a professional tax advisor before claiming them).
